Risk-Off vs. Risk-On Transitions

Understanding the Derivative Variables

Open Interest (OI)

The aggregate value of all outstanding, un-liquidated derivative contracts (longs and shorts) active across major exchanges (Binance, OKX, Bybit).

Predicted Funding Rate

Perpetual swaps do not have an expiration date. To keep the derivative contract price anchored to the true underlying index spot price, long or short positioning must exchange a structural premium fee every 8 hours.

Perpetual Contracts (Perps)

A type of derivative contract unique to crypto assets that functions similarly to a traditional futures contract but features no expiry or settlement date. Traders can maintain leverage indefinitely, provided they maintain sufficient margin requirements against real-time liquidation thresholds.

24h Liquidations (Long / Short)

The absolute dollar value of leveraged positions forcibly closed out by exchange engines due to a contract running out of required maintenance margin.
